In addition to this general aim, the prize intends to raise public awareness for the scientific and applied achievements and to foster insight into the interdependency of the scientific progress, ongoing innovation processes and rural development.

The award is accompanied by a certificate and prize money amounting to 25,000 €. The prize money is not restricted and is intended to promote the innovative research of the successful nominee. Suitable candidates from any European country must be nominated by the dean of their faculty or college or by the director of their research institution. There is no age limit, but in the selection process preference is given to younger researchers. The research which the nomination is based on must have been carried out at a European institution and should not date back for more than five years. Nominations should not exceed 10 pages and must include the following documentation:

1. Personal data

Name, title, position

Address, phone, e-mail

2. Curriculum Vitae

3. A short comprehensible summary of the achievements (1 page)

4. A precise description of the scientific achievements and a short reflection on how these resulted in new ideas for sustainable land-use and thus have affected or may affect society.

5. Details of the candidate's scientific credentials and a list of selected relevant publications, presentations, previously received awards, honorary work in scientific organizations and societies.
